9 Practical Steps, Especially for Wellness, Well-being and Mental Health Professionals

by | 2023. Dec. 14.

This article continues from my previous piece, "How to Build Your Online Presence as a Well-being Professional." It's written for those working in wellness and mental health fields, but it can also be useful if you're looking to become visible in other areas. Let's go through the initial steps!

Before you start creating your brand and online presence, it’s worth answering a few questions for yourself. Let me clarify that I am not a marketer. I won’t be showing you marketing trends but rather my approach, based on my work. I aim to use minimal jargon. You won’t read about “competitor analysis” here, as that would be more important if you were selling similar products like TVs or computer parts.

But that's not your case! You are unique!

It doesn't matter how many others are in your field because you’re not just selling services; you’re making visible the values you work by and making yourself accessible to those who need you.

When you are present in this way, the result (not the goal) is that people will seek you out and pay for your programs, consultations, massages, or courses.

You don't have to compete with other helpers. It's enough to stop hiding.

9 Practical Steps to Get Started

These steps are based on how I take a brief. A brief is a short, concise summary of the job details and what my client wants. The basis of the brief is a conversation. During the first conversation, I aim to explore not just what my potential client wants but also the values they hold. While we think together, I continuously pay attention and note down everything important. I particularly focus on the sentences where strength, passion, and deep belief appear. I usually take several pages of notes during the first conversation.

Take a notebook and pen, and answer the questions. Write down everything that comes to mind without filtering.

1., MEETING YOUR CALLING

Reflect on how you and your calling met. What led you to it? Why is this important to you? Simply think through your story. Write down everything! Whether in bullet points, short sentences, images, or sensations—however it comes out. If you like to think out loud, you can even record your answers on your phone and then note down the key concepts, underlining your stronger statements.

2., IDEAL CLIENT

If you’re already working in your field, review who you’ve worked with so far. Who were your ideal clients? What commonalities do they share? Write down everything that comes to mind without filtering.

If you’re just starting, close your eyes and imagine your ideal client. What age group do they belong to? What are their characteristics? What problems or difficulties are they facing? What do you and they have in common?

3., CLIENT NEEDS

What can help your ideal client who comes to you? What might they need? What can you offer them? How have you helped them so far? How are you present when you work together?

4., TOOLKIT

Milyen eszköztárral dolgozol? Miért pont ezeket választottad?

5., UNIQUENESS

What are your strengths as a helper? What approach has developed in you through your personal growth? What is your unique perspective?

I know answering these questions isn’t easy, so give yourself time, and perhaps in a relaxed state, observe what emerges in you in response to the questions.

6., VISUAL APPEARANCE

What colors do you like? Is there a symbol you identify with? What might your ideal client identify with?

It’s a misconception that a good brand reflects you and that good online presence is about you. It isn’t. A good brand is like a gentle (or firm) touch. Your website—this might sound strange—should primarily not be about showcasing you or even your services. It is made to build a bridge between you and your ideal client.

7., The First Pillar of the Bridge: TRUST

Trust requires your face, your gaze. You are essential to it. Just as you do not trust written texts and expressed thoughts, tools, and techniques alone, neither does your prospective client. We trust the person behind the words and tools who is present and touches us.

Quality images are important. It’s worth investing time and some money in having a few (the more, the better) really good pictures of you that give an accurate (literally) picture of who you are. It’s beneficial to take some photos outdoors, against a neutral background, leaving enough space for cropping, and to capture a few mood shots of you at work.

8., The Second Pillar: THE POWER OF TOUCH

Touch can be a supportive kind word, the awakening of hope, the power of empathy, or a personal example—which is not the same as self-promotion.

The first touch is the content and appearance of your homepage. The touch is the first impression a visitor gets when they land on your website or social media page. Since your online presence is the bridge, it’s beneficial if the key theme that likely led your ideal client to your site is immediately recognizable. Therefore, the touch should be about them, not about you. At the same time, boldly place your face next to it, so they immediately see who they are connecting with.

9., The Third Pillar: THE STYLE OF COMMUNICATION

Write the content of your website as if you are conversing with your ideal client, addressing the topics that matter to them through your unique perspective. It’s not advisable to post a one-page, official description of your services, as your prospective client is the least interested in that. Of course, you can write about your tools, but do it in your own words, with faith, love, and passion—and in light of how you effectively help solve your client’s problem with a particular tool.

The primary concern isn’t what tool you use, but whether your visitor realizes you are the person who can help solve their problem. They are not looking for a tool but a genuine connection with someone who can likely help them.

This is true even if someone specifically searches for a yoga instructor (or masseur, coach, etc.). When your visitor wants to solve something through yoga (or massage, coaching, etc.), they still decide based on whether a bridge starts to form between you. Keep the pillars in mind: Trust, Touch, Communication Style.

I hope you will find the above useful, and if you are barely or not at all visible yet, you will soon be! You know very well—because you see it around you—how much you are needed and all that you can give.
